Fluidsense: a wearable medical device for fluid management of patients

The objective of FLUIDSENSE project is to develop a wearable medical device that can obtain the continuous fluid level of patients, notifying clinicians in case of abnormal conditions.

This will be the first clinically accurate wearable device for fluid level detection, using a novel multi-sensing approach to improve the accuracy:

  • a radar sensor that can measure the differential reflection of radio waves under different fluid levels,
  • impedance sensor that measures the changes in thoracic fluid levels and sensing of Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) that characterizes the changes in hemodynamic parameters with fluid level changes.

The FLUIDSENSE wearable device and platform can be used for monitoring renal, heart failure and sepsis patients in hospitals (ICUs, as well as wards) and for at home patients at the risk of readmission. This project can serve to over 17 million patients in Europe (10 million chronic kidney and heart failure patients, 7 million with sepsis and related infections). With the system to be developed, the clinicians can immediately receive the health status of patients, and quickly interact with them on the web platform.

The project is carried out with our Swiss partner SmartCardia with expertise in developing wearable medical devices for cardiovascular monitoring. PKNM has large expertise in developing clinical support systems and machine learning for health state deterioration. Parsek is a leading SME for developing cloud based analytics and interaction system, who will guide the project.

The project is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund.
