Virtual Medical board: an advanced digital tool for multidisciplinary medical reviews

The objective of a VMB – Virtual Medical Board project is the development of an innovative solution – an advanced digital tool for conducting Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Meeting sessions with automatisation and patient-centric model.

The purpose of the Virtual Medical Board (VMB) project is to optimise the multidisciplinary medical team (MDT) sessions, cost-effectively and with the use of state of the art technologies, while providing more holistic patient-centric treatment by enabling patients to take an active role in the decision-making process of their treatment.

The solution will allow for the participation of different experts regardless of their geographical and temporal presence, as well as automated clinical decision support.

The Virtual Medical Board (VMB) project has four main components:

  1. Improve patient involvement in the MDT process. Studies have shown that in the future, patients will not only be involved in their care process through digital tools (e.g. patient portals), but will also have a possibility to participate in the decision-making process (e.g. Multidisciplinary Team Meeting (MDT) setup). The implementation of the MDT solution will involve different levels of patient activity in the decision-making process. As a part of this solution, we will define the steps to be taken in each case, which will determine at what stage the patient will be involved in decision making and to what extent.
  2. Establish a Cloud-based solution for greater scalability. In collaboration with an experienced cloud provider Open Line, we intend to enhance our offering based on the advanced business models, aiming towards Software-as-a-Service (Saas) model to improve solution scalability across various European markets.
  3. Development of automated production of meeting minutes. This will allow the automatic transcription of conversations (speech to text) held in the MDT sessions to significantly improve the efficiency of medical boards. The solution will be adapted to medical terminology, which is considered to be an international standard. It will be able to identify different MDT speakers by using voice recognition. In addition to increasing the effectiveness of writing conclusions and diagnoses, the functionality will also help professionals to prevent unnecessary administrative errors by minimising efforts of manual inputs.
  4. Diagnostics supported by AI-enabled decision-making suggestions. The implemented algorithm will compare the content of the current MDT session with the available information on past final diagnoses and other available health-related data and make recommendations based on this.

Two project partners will actively participate in the development of the solution. The main partner Parsek has the leading role in the architecture design and development itself. The project partner Open Line, who possesses extensive knowledge and experience in developing cloud solutions, developing server infrastructure and IT support in healthcare systems, will enable the implementation of the solution into a cloud service. The company will also participate in all processes of analysing final results and testing of the final solution.

Both project partners will also be involved in the later commercialisation of the solution. Open Line has a strong footprint in some significant markets (e.g. the Netherlands, Belgium) and will enter these markets independently in the first phase of commercialisation. Parsek will offer the new solution in other markets and penetrate the global market in the later stages of business positioning.

The investment is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund.
